Today I’m sharing one of our first interviews, featuring my long-time friend, Santana Cosplay. I met Santana at her 18th birthday party when my band played at her house. Santana is a super-nice girl who, like me, has a plethora of degrees. During the day she’s a school teacher in Wayne County, WV, but at night she’s a cosplayer, YouTuber, and singer — all which bring in additional income. She has a lot of different projects going on!
If you’re not sure what cosplay is, I’ll share that with you. Cosplaying is when people dress to resemble a character or person from a TV show, comic, or movie. Cosplay (short for “costume play”) is common at conventions or even birthday parties. It’s a lot of fun because it involves creating, acting, and skill. These days, one needn’t attend a special event to see cosplay in action. Elements of cosplay have infiltrated mainstream fashion and culture–you may spot some cat ears here or a playful tail over there.
Conventions usually feature actors, voice actors, or authors there to sign photos and sell merchandise. Santana usually signs her cosplays and sells her album at these conventions. She’s a cosplay semi-celebrity!

Santana Cosplay Interview:
What is your full-time gig?
Being an entertainer!! (She’s a school teacher but they must be
students must be entertained!)
What do you do on the side?
Go to conventions.
How/when did you get into cosplay?
5 years ago thanks to [my friend] Donovan, who talked me into going to a convention with him. I was hooked ever since. Dressing up has always been fun. Halloween was my favorite holiday but now I can cosplay whenever I please!
Do you find it easier to make or purchase your costumes?
Sometimes it’s difficult finding what you need online so to get a cosplay that best suits you, it’s best if you make them, but sometimes I don’t have the time to do that and I will purchase something and alter it.
What is your favorite aspect surrounding your cosplay experience?
Meeting tons of celebrities.
Would you ever take this side gig up to full-time?
So, you’re now a YouTuber; what inspired/started this? How successful have you been?
I love making people laugh and creating silly videos. I’ve had several videos that have done very well and pull in some monies but I’m still not where I need to be.
What avenues have you taken for self promotion? What’s been the most successful?
Advertising through the internet and vending at cons. Facebook has been the best way to get my stuff out there so far.
What was your most challenging cosplay and why?
Mecha Asuna because the armor wings were so big, they were hard to fit to a harness and create them.
THE WORLD — or.. Lexington Comic Con. That’s where I’ll be at next.
Check out the Lexington Comic Con. Chuck Norris will be there this year!
